The History Project

What is this History Project all about?

The History Project is about researching and recording a potted history of the role carried out by units of the Royal Corps of Signals in the development and deployment of communications for the Royal Artillery's Thunderbird II Surface to Air Guided Missile System during the period 1959 - 1977.

This particular task was assigned to the following units: 260 Signal Squadron (Trials), 217 Signal Squadron (AGRA), 653 Signal Troop (SAGW) later (SAM), 654 Signal Troop (SAGW), 655 Signal Troop (SAGW) and 260 Signal Squadron (SAM). Each of these units had a particular and quite unique role in the development of the Surface to Air Missile Communications System.

The History Project is a work in progress and if you served in any of the units mentioned above or served in 36 or 37 Heavy Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery irrespective of the cap badge you wore then you can assist in the development of this history project.

If I am to complete this project in the foreseeable future I need your help. Your experience and memory of your time spent with these units is vital to the success of this project and you will soon see why as you start your journey back in time.

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the information presented on this site is accurate some errors are bound to occur. Much of the information is based on the failing memories of our rapidly ageing members and I am not the best typist in the world. Should you come across any mistakes, omissions, fairy stories or porkie pies please let me know and I will amend accordingly.

Well enough of my waffle......
